Hello My Name Is...
Donna Hickman

Education:
I graduated from Francis Marion University in 1978 (Boy! Am I old!)I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology, and I minored in English.I also acquired Teaching Certification while there.I completed graduate work at The College of Charleston, and attended night school at the Citadel. While there, I was fortunate to work with Dr. Dan T. Outz-a pioneer in teacher education and the power of reading and Bibliotherapy in the lives of "at risk" students. At that time I acquired Reading Certification for students K-12.I am also certified to teach Language Arts 6-12.
Personal
I lived and taught in SC for many years, and moved back to North Carolina about 10 years ago.I was born in Charlotte, NC, and my dad and many of my family still live there. My sister teaches in Buncombe County, and our neice and nephew also attend school there. My mom resides in Asheville.
When I was a child my family often visited the mountains during the summer. I believe that I realized then, as I do now, how beautiful the mountains of NC are! It is very evident to me and my family that our values are very connected with the ones here. I mean worship, and family, little babies and old folks, hard work, and respect for one another, and the pride we take in the accomplishments of our children. Not to mention humor and humility, manners, and art, and education.
The greatest promotion in my professional career occured when I was able to move from teaching in Buncombe County to my former position in Michell County.
I am happily married to Harold Hickman, and we have one son, Harry-one of our greatest blessings.
Harold is a master carpenter, and Harry is a dedicated student of music! We bought an old stone house (in much need of repair!))near Greenmountain.Restoring it,and the land around it,is a work in progress. I still look around me sometimes in the afternoon when rays of sun trickle through the trees, and after a good rain when the stream sounds like an ocean and thank God for bringing us here!
We are members of The First Preysbeterian Church of Burnsville. I am passionate about my work, and my desire to keep in that state of Peace and Calmness that comes from faith in God's purpose for the world.
I am thankful for the opportunity to get to know, love, and teach my students, and all of the faculty and workforce I am privileged to work with in Mitchell County.
Peace!
